New York (77WABC) – Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams had to stoke some fires Wednesday after other contenders in the New York City mayoral race accused him of not living in New York.

Adams allowed reporters inside a Brooklyn apartment he owns to show he lived there, after questions were raised about whether he really spends his time in Fort Lee, New Jersey with his girlfriend.

“It’s really silly to even insinuate,” Adams told CBS. “How foolish would someone have to be to run to be the mayor of the City of New York and live in another municipality?”

Opponents have also been demanding that the frontrunner for mayor release his E-ZPass records to prove that he lives in the city he’s running for mayor in.

A report from Politico found Adams sleeping in his office in Brooklyn Borough Hall for many nights to originally combat COVID-19, and also shows some discrepancies with his actual place of residence as well as property he owns. Despite this, Adams insists that he primarily resides in New York.

“I never hid that I owned a co-op in New Jersey with Tracy, but I live … my primary residence is in Brooklyn,” Adams added.

Aside from the issue of his residence, his opponents have also criticized Adams for skipping out on Thursday’s mayoral debate hosted by CBS. His opponents say it’s because he doesn’t want to answer tough questions, CBS reported. Adams says he will be with the family of 10-year-old Justin Wallace, who was killed in a shooting last weekend in Far Rockaway, Queens.
