New York (77WABC) – In a press release from the NYPD on Thursday, the overall crime index in New York City rose 22% compared to the same time last year. The two biggest crimes were shooting incidents and robberies, which increased 73% to 173 and 46.7% to 1,182, respectively.
Burglary was the only reduced crime – down 21.8% compared to last year. There were 37 murders in May 2021, the same as May 2020.
“NYPD cops have shown us time and again they are in May 2021, willing to go in harm’s way on behalf of all New Yorkers,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea in the statement. “It is this commitment to our collective public safety – in tandem with the communities we serve – that will allow our great city to prevail in the challenges we face together.”
The statement says the NYPD remains focused on reducing violence across the five boroughs especially since the summer months are coming.
“Working in tandem with community partners, listening to local concerns and implementing intelligence-driven strategies are all integral to improved public safety. By continually scrutinizing each act of violence, NYPD commanders remain nimble in their deployment of officers to the most impacted areas of the city. At the same time, the court system’s operational capacity continues to broaden – allowing the NYPD and its prosecutorial partners to increasingly hold drivers of violence accountable through the culmination of long-term investigations.”
The stats also show that 108 rapes were reported, with 86 of them being from this year. Hate crimes have also continued to rise, with the biggest disparities being against Asians (335%), crimes based on sexual orientation (188%), Black people (80%), and Semitism (37%).
