NEW YORK (77WABC) – After almost two weeks of conflict, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to a ceasefire Thursday. Despite this, multiple attacks against Jewish people were rampant in various parts of New York City.

There were multiple acts of violence, mainly in Times Square and the surrounding areas, including what appears to be industrial-grade fireworks being set off.

According to the NYPD, in Midtown Thursday there were 26 arrests and a number of summonses given. The charges include resisting arrest, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct, and criminal possession of a weapon. The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey made a statement on Twitter yesterday regarding the incidents:

“Outraged & disgusted by the violence & #antisemitism that took place last night in Manhattan as groups in the streets blamed #NYC Jews for the conflict in the Middle East,” said the tweet. “This is one example already being investigated as a hate crime @NYPDHateCrimes. We call on all to speak out.”

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force put out their own tweet regarding one of the incidents:

“The Hate Crime Task Force is investigating a gang assault of a Jewish man in Times Square that happened this evening,” the tweet said. “If you have any information on any of the participants, DM us or call @NYPDTips 1-800-577-TIPS. We will post more information as it becomes available.”

Friday afternoon, the NYPD put out an update, saying there was an arrest on one of the incidents:

“During last night’s demonstration in Midtown Manhattan, 23-year-old Waseem Awawdeh was arrested for using a crutch to assault a man in front of 1604 Broadway,” says the NYPD. “He’s been charged with hate crime assault 2, gang assault 2, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon.”
