An 11th Annual Blood Drive Saturday In Memory of Fallen SCPD Officer Glen Ciano

Commack, NY (77WABC)-The Commack Fire Department at 6309 Jericho Turnpike will play home Saturday to the 11th annual blood drive in memory of  Suffolk County Police Officer Glen Ciano.

The drive will be held from 8 am to 8 pm.  People are encouraged to roll up their sleeves as blood supplies in New York are below targets for all blood types.

Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron and Commack Fire District Chairman of the Board Pat Fazio joined Ciano’s widow Susan and representatives from the New York Blood Center today to announce the blood drive.

Officer Ciano, a 22-year veteran of the department,  was killed on Sunday, Feb. 22nd, 2009, when his patrol car was struck by a vehicle being driven by an intoxicated operator.

The 45-year-old officer was responding to assist a fellow officer who had stopped a vehicle with stolen license plates. His patrol car was struck by a vehicle making a left turn onto Commack Road from Vanderbilt Parkway. The force of the collision sent the patrol car off the road and into a utility pole. The patrol car burst into flames, killing Officer Ciano.

Police say the suspect was arrested at the scene and it was determined that he had been operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. In January 2011 he was sentenced to one to four years in prison in connection with Officer Ciano’s death.

Police Officer Ciano was assigned to the 2nd Precinct. He is survived by his wife and two children.
