NYC Ready To Vaccinate 12 to 15-Year-Olds; Mayor Announces Open Boulevards

New York, NY (77WABC) NYC Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi says parents or guardians will need to give consent if they wish to have their child or children in the 12 to 15-year-old age group vaccinated for Covid-19.  During NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s briefing Wed. morning, Dr. Chokshi said parents or guardians can give permission in person, over the phone, or via a written form. More information about that is available on the city’s website nyc.gov.

On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration approved the emergency use of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for the 12 to 15-year-old age group.  The use of the vaccine for that age group also won approval from the Centers for Disease Control yesterday. A CDC Advisory Committee met approving the emergency use of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine.

Dr. Chokshi feels the vaccine is safe for 12 to 15-year-olds. He said, “based on the FDA report, the safety profile for the 12 to 15-year-olds is strong.” The dose is the same one given to millions of adults at the same strength.

DeBlasio also announced that Thursday he will sign legislation making the Open Streets Program permanent. Open Streets prioritize pedestrians and cyclists by transforming streets into public spaces. Open Streets are coordinated in partnership with local community organizations.

As part of the  Mayor’s Streets Week Initiative. DeBlasio announced the concept of Open Boulevards. Ten areas n the city’s five boroughs are earmarked for the launch of the Open Streets Initiative as NYC launches the concept.

In Manhattan, the Open Boulevards concept is planned this summer for Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues from 106th to 110th streets. In Brooklyn, it will launch along sections of 5th Ave. in  Park Slope and Sunset Park.  On Staten Island, it’s planned for a section of Minthrone St. from  Victory Blvd. to Bay St. In Queens, Ditmars Blvd. from 33rd to 36th Streets and Woodside Ave. from 76th to 78th streets and in the Bronx Alexander Ave. from Bruckner Blvd. to East 134th St. and on Arthur Ave. from East 187th St. to Crescent Ave.
