colonial

New York, NY (77WABC)- 77WABC Owner, John Catsimatidis this morning informed the Bernie and Sid in the morning program that a reliable source has told him an undisclosed ransom has been paid to DarkSide, the Russian based group that the FBI has confirmed hacked the Colonial Pipeline last Friday. Russia has denied involvement in the hack.

He sent a text to host Sid Rosenberg reading “my intelligence sources say bribe for the pipeline was paid, ” the crisis “will be over by Monday.” It was announced as breaking news on 77WABC during the show.

Catsimatidis holdings under the Red Apple Group umbrella include Kwik Fill, United Refining Co., United Metro Energy, and Gristedes Supermarkets.

The cyberattack has disrupted the major supply pipeline for the Northeast Coast. The pipeline starts in Houston, Texas, and ends in Linden, NJ. It normally carries 2.5 million gallons of amounting to 45% of the East Coast’s supply of diesel, petrol, and jet fuel.

The hack has raised cyber-security concerns and caused shortages at gas pumps and for airlines.

On Monday, the FBI officially confirmed that DarkSide was responsible for compromising Colonial Pipeline’s networks.

The group has also released a statement on the Colonial Pipeline attack:

“We are apolitical, we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for other our motives. Our goal is to make money, and not creating problems for society. From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future.”

In its latest update, Colonial Pipeline says it continues to make forward progress in “our around-the-clock efforts to return our system to service.”
