An Off-Duty NYPD Officer Killed In A Late Night Crash On The LIE

Yaphank, NY (77WABC)-Suffolk County Police have confirmed that the person killed in a single-vehicle crash on the eastbound Long Island Expressway near Exit 53 in Brentwood late last was 30-year-old Ryan McKenna of Hicksville. He was an off-duty NYPD police officer.

Detectives from Suffolk County’s Third Squad says McKenna was driving a 2018 Nissan Frontier eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, just west of exit 53 when the vehicle struck the median and overturned in the HOV lane at approximately 10:55 p.m.

McKenna was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Two weeks ago NYPD officer 43-year-old Anastasios Tsakos was struck and killed while directing traffic on the LIE in Flushing Meadows, Queens by an alleged drunk driver.
