Five Fires In 24 Hours In Nassau County A Family Of Three Killed

Nassau County, NY (77WABC)-Three people are dead following an explosion and fire in Garden City, NY. Two parents and their college-bound daughter accepted to NYU were killed.  The victims are identified as a 62-year-old man, a 60-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old female. Nassau County Police say 11 fire departments and fifty firefighters responded to the scene.

Investigators are looking into a total of five fires in Nassau County within a 24-hour span.

A massive fire at a rubbish facility in Westbury began Wed. night around 9 pm following an explosion and burned into the day on Thursday. Over 300 firefighters from at least 37 fire departments from Nassau and Suffolk County were called in to fight the fire. A collapsed wall fell onto LIRR train tracks. The fire interrupted LIRR service.

A 6 pm fire on Rockland St. in Westbury followed an explosion. A woman suffered smoke inhalation as a result.

Around 8:30 Thursday night in East Meadow, residents escaped a house after a loud bang and fire. One person suffered minor injuries, including a burn to a hand.

Firefighters were also called to a fire in New Castle around 8:45 pm. No injuries were reported there.

The cause and origin of the fires are under investigation. All 71 Nassau County Fire Departments were activated during the day on Thursday.
