New York, NY (77WABC)-Twenty-two-month-old Da’Vell Gardner, Jr. died after being hit by gunfire the evening of July 12th, 2020, during a family cookout near the Raymond Bush Playground in Bedford-Stuyvesant during a hot summer night. Investigators say two gunmen approached said nothing and opened fire. The boy from Chester St. in Brooklyn, just two months shy of his second birthday, was shot in his abdomen and died at Maimonides Medical Center.
The gunfire also struck a 36-year-old male in his leg, a 37-year-old in his groin, and a 27-year-old in his ankle. All three survived their injuries.
Police from the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn Wednesday arrested Dashawn Austin of 1722 Ralph Ave. in connection with the deadly incident. The 25-year-old Brooklyn man faces the following charges including murder in connection with the boy’s death and the shooting of three others:
- Murder (3 counts; Intentional, Depraved Indifference, Person Less Than 11-years old)
- Attempted Murder (3 counts)
- Assault
- Attempted Assault (2 counts)
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon: Loaded Firearm (4 counts)
- Reckless Endangerment
A $20,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. The boy’s father. Da’Vell Gardner Sr. made an emotional plea last September following his son’s death for information leading to an arrest or arrests in the case:
Police say a second suspect in the case is awaiting extradition.
