Wyandanch, NY (77WABC) – A Suffolk County community is in shock after learning an infant lost her life too soon, after a fatal hit-and-run in Wyandanch on Sunday.
Suffolk County Police announcing the death of the baby girl, after doctors at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center attempted to keep her alive. The infant child, identified as Saige Berry by authorities, was a passenger in a violent crash that happened on Sunday evening.
Investigators say the driver of a Nissan SUV was driving eastbound on Davidson Street, near the intersection of Pine Street, when the SUV crashed head-on with a late-model Lexus, which was headed in the opposite direction. The impact of the crash was so great, according to police, the Nissan overturned.
Police say little Saige was a passenger inside of the Nissan, along with her 24-year-old mother Dywanna Finney. Finney suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Lexus, identified by police as 42-year-old Tyesha Forte also suffered minor injuries.
Authorities say the driver of the 2006 Nissan Murano took off running, immediately after the crash, leaving the mother and the 8-month-old in the middle of the street, inside the overturned SUV.
