HARLEM, NY (77WABC) – The NYPD made an arrest in that gruesome stomping attack that left an Asian man now fighting for his life.  The monster was caught on video stomping 61 year old Yao Pan Ma at least six times in the head as he was collecting cans to make ends meet on Friday at the Third Avenue and East 125th Street in East Harlem.

On Tuesday, cops announced they arrested Jarrod Powell for the senseless and random attack.  Police say he’s a 49 year old ex convict with a long rap sheet.  Powell has been arrested at least 15 times and for this latest crime has been charged with two counts of felony assault according to police.  Reportedly Powell was homeless at the time of his arrest.

The NYPD says it’s still investigating the incident and more charges could follow.  Meantime, Ma remains in a coma with his family fearing he will never wake up from.

Video of the incident can be seen below.  A warning, it is very disturbing.

Here’s a picture of the suspect that led to his arrest.

“I’m sickened to learn of yet another bigoted act of violence against an Asian-American man,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo in a statement released on Sunday.  ” This is not who we are as New Yorkers, and we will not let these cowardly acts of hate against members of our New York family intimidate us, said Cuomo.

Two good Samaritans are credited for helping to keep the victim alive, as he remains in critical condition at New York City Health + Hospitals Harlem.

Hate crimes against Asian-Americans have skyrocketed in New York and nationwide. So far in 2021, anti-Asian attacks in the city have increased 450% compared to the same period in 2020, according to the latest NYPD statistics.
