Hillman
New York, NY (77WABC)-NYC Corrections Captain, Rebecca Hillman, pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of criminally negligent homicide in the death of an inmate who died by suicide while on her watch last November. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said Hillman allegedly showed “callous disregard” for Ryan Wilson by ordering officers not to perform potentially lifesaving measures and leaving him hanging in a locked cell for approximately 15 minutes at the Manhattan Detention Complex.
Hillman pleaded not guilty at her arraignment Monday. She is also charged with lying in her written account of the death.
77WABC Correspondent and News Anchor Sara Lee Kessler reports on this story:
Hillman’s lawyer said she is a “hardworking mother and employee who did her best in a very difficult job that is defined by trauma and tragedy” and that they “look forward to defending the serious charges against her.”
Hillman has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.
