NJ Gov. Murphy Announces Increase In Indoor Room Capacity and General Outdoor Gathering Limits

Trenton, New Jersey – Gov. Phil Murphy held a press conference Monday, announcing an increase in the general outdoor gathering limit and indoor room capacity for private catered events, political events, funerals, memorial services and performances beginning on May 10.

Those who will have private catered events, including weddings and proms, can use a dance floor but there will be masking and social distancing requirements in place. Dance floors that are in bars, nightclubs and other businesses will remain closed for the time being.

Gov. Murphy announced that The Department of Education and the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education will put out a statement Monday with instruction regarding proms and graduations.

The general outdoor gathering limit will increase to 500 individuals from 200 individuals starting May 10. In addition, the outdoor capacity for large venues will increase to 50% and six feet of distance needs to be met between seated groups. Large venues are described as 1,000 or more fixed seats.

Beginning May 10, outdoor carnivals and fairs can occur at 50% capacity.

Gov. Murphy tweeted out that 2,819,226 New Jerseyans have been fully vaccinated which is 60% of the state’s goal in having 4.7 million fully vaccinated adults by June 30th.

The governor tweeted out an encouraging post to reach out to family and friends and to motivate them to get vaccinated.
