NYC Abolishes Traditional Summer School Launching Summer Rising

New York, NY (77WABC)-What is traditionally known as summer school is being done away with for students in NYC’s 1,700 public schools. NYC Public Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter joined NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio in making the announcement during the Mayor’s Tuesday briefing at City Hall.

She explains the new concept below which includes academics,  cultural enrichment, and recreation. There’s also job opportunities, internships, and work experience available for interested youth:

Mayor de Blasio said, “this is not like what we’ve known in the past, this is really groundbreaking for this city and rare in this country that we would take an approach that really is for everyone in the summer,” adding “so this ends summer school as we knew it.”

The program will be in effect for grades K-5 from 8 am to 6 pm for 7 weeks five days a week,  for grades 6-8 the program will be held for 6 weeks four days a week. Summer rising will offer high school students continued support for unfinished course work and academic acceleration.

Porter said, “we are embarking on an unprecedented reimaging of what summer needs to be for our children and our school communities.”

The Chancellor said sign up for Summer Rising begins on April 26th on the Department of Youth and Community Development Website.

Summer Rising is free and open to NYC public school students in grades K-12.
