NY: New York during the COVID-19 pandemic
New York, NY (77WABC)-Shuttered due to the viral pandemic, there is good news for New Yorkers seeking relief from the heat this summer. NYC’s public beaches will reopen Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 29th. NYC’s public beaches will fully open on Sat. June 26th, the day after public schools close for summer recess.
NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio made the announcement this morning during today’s daily briefing.
Amid the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Mayor said, “we’re going to do it the right way.” He added health and safety measures will be in place, “there will be smart restrictions there will be smart rules, but whenever possible outside the water, of course, we want people to keep their masks on, etc.”
The Mayor said the only exception to the re-opening of pools is five pools currently under renovation that will not open this season.
Our city is slowly emerging from a very long year and the on-time opening of our beaches and pools is a sure sign of our continuing recovery,” said Assembly Member Steven Cymbrowitz of Brooklyn.“We all still need to exercise caution, but we know that this summer will once again be filled with the energy and excitement that make our city’s pools and beaches great.”
NYC Council Member Peter Koo commented, “our pools and public beaches are hallmarks of the summer in the city. Reopening these cherished spaces will give New Yorkers a long-awaited opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and public facilities of our city.”
