A FEMA Covid 19 Vaccination Site Open In NJ As Cases Spike

(Trenton, NJ/77WABC)-The newly opened FEMA Covid Vaccination Site open as of Wednesday at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ is one of 25 federally run FEMA vaccination centers around the country. The site is at NJIT’s Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Center has the capacity to administer 6,000 Covid-19 vaccinations a day, in addition to the supply the state of NJ is receiving.

NJ residents can register for Covid-19 vaccination appointments on the state website Covid19.nj.gov.

Over the next eight weeks, the FEMA  run site will administer the first doses of the vaccine for the first three weeks, then the second doses during the following three weeks, and the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine during the final two weeks of the federal operation.

The opening of the FEMA run vaccination site in Newark, NJ comes as the state is seeing increases in hospitalizations and cases of Covid-19 among younger segments of the population. During his Wednesday briefing, NJ Gov. Phil Murphy and Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli warned of increasing Covid-19 cases in the Garden State.

If the pace continues, Gov. Phil Murphy warned there could be more than 5,400 new daily cases by April 18, and in a worst-case scenario, more than 8,000 cases a day by May 18.

Commissioner Persichilli said over the past two weeks new hospitalizations in the state are up 28%, new patient admissions are up 21% and ICU admissions are up 16%. However, she noted ventilator use is down 4%. It’s believed the ventilator use is down because Covid-19 cases are increasing among younger, not older populations.

A comment by the Health Commissioner is below regarding the increase in cases of Covid 19:

Persichilli said, “we have seen a 31% increase among hospitalizations in individuals between the ages of 20 and 29.”  She said the majority of the increases in Covid-19 are believed to be from variants strains of Covid-19. She added that the highest increase in Covid-19 cases in the state is in the 40 to 49-year-old age group which is experiencing a 48% spike in cases. A 9% spike in the 30 to the 39-year-old age group is occurring. For the 50 to 59-year-old age group, a 29% increase in Covid 19 is occurring. Lower increases in cases of Covid 19 are seen in older segments of the state’s population. There is a 27% increase in the 60 to 69-year-old age group and a 7% increase in the 70 to 79-year-old age group. Interestingly Persichilli said there is only a 1% increase in cases of Covid-19 among state residents age 80 and older.

Persichilli said regions of the state that were in yellow risk zones in February are now all in more serious orange zones or in high-risk categories.

Officials urged the strict continuation of Covid-19 guidelines such as mask-wearing, handwashing, and social distancing.
