People stand in line as they wait for children to have their temperature taken before entering Public school 7 Louis F. Simeone in the Queens borough of New York, NY, December 8, 2020. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that public pre-K and elementary schools can return to in-person learning on Dec. 7., while middle and high schools remain closed; Schools were closed on Nov. 18 when the city surpassed the 3% infection rate threshold set by the Mayor de Blasio. The City-Journal reports that elite schools here in New York as well as across the country are telling white male students not to raise their hand first and that when it comes to physics, it shouldn’t be called Newton’s Laws in order to “de-center whiteness” among other types of controversial rhetoric.

Lesson objectives for fifth- and sixth-grade students include “identify misconceptions about Christopher Columbus” and “explain why the US should celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.” Seventh- and eighth-grade students receive a lesson titled “Think About It George Washington: The Beginnings of 273 Years of Hypocrisy in America.”

Many parents are now voicing their concerns about what their children are learning, but fear being ostracized if they speak out.
