NEW YORK (77 WABC) – Top New York State officials announced Tuesday that they are looking to rid Governor Andrew Cuomo of his emergency powers, which were granted to him in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic.
This action comes as Cuomo is under fire for his handling of nursing homes during COVID19 and the multiple alleged sexual harassments claims.
“These temporary emergency powers were granted as New York was devastated by a virus we knew nothing about. Now it is time for our government to return to regular order,” said state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers). Stewart-Cousins along with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx) are the two top Democrats spearheading the legislation.
According to the legislature, the temporary emergency powers are due to expire on April 30.
The legislation introduced today will repeal the powers immediately.
The earliest a vote can be held is Friday.
