An Asian Man Stabbed In Chinatown Suspect Charged After Turning Himself In

(New York, NY/77WABC)-A 36-year-old Asian man was stabbed in his back with a large kitchen knife at Baxter and  Worth Streets in Chinatown at  6:30 pm last night by a man who turned himself into the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Salman Muflihi of Brooklyn, NY. He is charged with attempted criminally negligent homicide, assault, forgery, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is set to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court today.

The victim underwent surgery at Bellevue Hospital, he is reported in critical condition.

The incident is under investigation by the NYPD’s Asian Hate Crimes Task Force. The task force consisting of 25 officers speaking 11 different dialects was established to investigate an uptick in hate crimes against Asian Americans following the Covid-19 pandemic.

A knife was recovered at the scene by police.

Police said they are not investigating the stabbing as a hate crime at this time.
