Parler is back online

parler-2

NEW YORK (77WABC) – Parler, the social networking site that drew millions in the quest for “free speech” before disappearing from the internet, is back online.  On Monday, for the first time since Jan. 10, typing parler.com into a web browser returned a page to log into the social networking site.

Several weeks ago Amazon and other tech giants such as Apple took Parler off line because it allowed its users to call for violence around the time of the Capitol riot which left 5 people dead, one of them a Capitol police officer.

It was unclear if the social network, which had positioned itself as a free speech and lightly moderated site, could survive after it had been blacklisted by the biggest tech companies.  Parler, which was first launched in August 2018, is though currently back online for current users and will be available for new users starting next week, the company said.

“Parler’s new platform is built on robust, sustainable, independent technology,” a news release said.

Parler’s interim CEO, Mark Meckler, issued a statement following Monday’s development saying, “Parler was built to offer a social media platform that protects free speech and values privacy and civil discourse.”

“When Parler was taken offline in January by those who desire to silence tens of millions of Americans, our team came together, determined to keep our promise to our highly engaged community that we would return stronger than ever,” he continued.

“We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back.”

Meckler then stressed that “Parler is being run by an experienced team and is here to stay.”

“We will thrive as the premier social media platform dedicated to free speech, privacy and civil dialogue,” he continued.

It was unclear exactly how Parler had figured out how to host its site on computer servers, the central technology underpinning any website, though it appeared Parler had partnered with a smaller company for the service.
