(New York, NY/77WABC)-A Federal Judge has denied an application of early release for former NYPD officer Justin Volpe.
Volpe wrote in his application, “I do not seek to evade just punishment for my crime. I have served the overwhelming majority of the sentence,” he said, “After 21 plus years in prison, it is my family who is being punished more.”
The Judge said Volpe does not present any extraordinary and compelling reasons, based on the possibility of contracting COVID-19.
Judge Frederic Block added, “In any event, reconsideration of the factors does not warrant a reduction of his sentence given the grave nature and circumstances of his crime.”
Volpe is scheduled for release in 2025 following his conviction in the 1997 sodomy of Haitian Immigrant Abner Louima. Volpe used a jagged wooden handle to sodomize Louima while in police custody following Louima’s arrest outside a Brooklyn nightclub.
Louima received an $8.75 million dollar settlement resulting from his civil suit against the city for police brutality. He has set up the Abner Louima Foundation to establish a hospital and community centers in Haiti, Florida, and New York for Haitian residents, immigrants, and others.
