NYPD Officer Shot To Be Released from Hospital Today; Suspect Charged

(New York, NY/77WABC)-NYPD Officer, 31-year-old Daniel Vargas,  is expected to be released from Jacobi Hospital today.

The six and a half year veteran officer, from the Bronx, was shot in the back below his bulletproof vest Tues. night in the Bronx during a traffic stop.

The suspect, 24-year-old Ajani Jones, was taken into custody and a gun recovered near the shooting scene. Jones is charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of stolen property. Police say Jones has several prior arrests in NYC and has a criminal record in NJ.

Vargas was in plainclothes part of the Gun Violence Suppression Divison when he and another officer encountered the suspect at the intersection of White Plains Road and lafayette Ave. in the Soundview Section of the Bronx. NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said the officer was struck once. Four shots were fired.

An investigation is ongoing.
