NEW YORK (AP/77 WABC) – Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is taking a veiled swing at President-elect Joe Biden.
DeVos is blasting the push for free college as a “socialist takeover of higher education” that could damage the “already fragile economy.”
#HigherEd policies should never entice students into greater debt, nor should they put taxpayer dollars at greater risk. There are too many politicians today who support policy that does both. Ultimately, nothing is “free.” Somebody, somewhere pays the bill. #FSATC2020 pic.twitter.com/9A06ZFy2rO

DeVos didn’t mention Biden by name during an online conference. But she is railing against “politicians” who want to cancel federal student debt or make college free.
Students need access to relevant information so they can be responsible consumers in the #HigherEd marketplace. That’s why we overhauled @usedgov’s College Scorecard, reformed accreditation, and opened more learning pathways for all students. #FSATC2020 pic.twitter.com/vpMuI2BsrE

DeVos has long opposed free college proposals and has been accused of undermining federal programs that let some borrowers get their student loans forgiven.
Biden says he wants to make public colleges and universities free for families earning less than $125,000 a year.
From day one, I challenged the team at FSA to rethink how we serve students. From simplifying the FAFSA to launching the myStudentAid mobile app and streamlining processing and repayment, we’re transforming FSA into a customer-focused financial institution. #FSATC2020 pic.twitter.com/fAks4k8dsC
