NEW YORK (77 WABC) — There are plenty of interested parties that want to purchase the New York Mets, team COO Jeff Wilpon told a UJA-Federation of New York panel on Thursday.

It comes just days after multiple outlets reported that Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer were making a serious push to buy the Mets. Wilpon was speaking on a panel about the future of the sports industry when he made the comments Thursday.

“The team will have some kind of transaction, I can’t tell you exactly what it’s going to be and how it’s going to look,” Wilpon said, according to Bleacher Report’s Yaron Weitzman. “But we’re working towards a transaction and there’s four or five suitors that are out there to do something with and a bunch of philanthropic planning and family planning that my dad and my uncle want to do. And it’s totally fine.”

Beyond the revelation about multiple suitors, Wilpon gave very few details.

“When we have something to truly announce and tell you about, we’ll do that,” he said. “Not going to play the speculation game or get in any kind of competition with Page Six or Variety Magazine.”

The last comment appearing to be a shot at the two outlets that were at the front of the news that Harris and Blitzer were interested in buying the Mets. Variety was first to report the news on Monday and Page Six is the gossip section of the New York Post, which reported heavily on the story on Monday as well.

The Wilpons have been looking for a new buyer for the Mets since a $2.4 billion deal to sell the team to hedge fund manager Steve Cohen fell apart in February.

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have also expressed interest in purchasing the Mets.
