NEW YORK (77 WABC) — President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will be terminating its relationship with the World Health Organization. He said the WHO failed to adequately respond to the coronavirus because China has “total control” over the global organization.
“Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities,” Trump said. “Countless lives have been taken and profound economic hardship has been inflicted across the globe.”
He said Chinese officials “ignored” their reporting obligations to the WHO and pressured the WHO to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered.
“The world is now suffering as a result of the misfeasance of the Chinese government,” Trump said.
The president noted that the U.S. contributes about $450 million to the world body while China provides about $40 million.
More than 102,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus.
