NEW YORK (77 WABC) — President Trump wants houses of worship opened immediately. He announced the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention new guidance will classify them as “essential.”
Trump spoke briefly at the White House where he took no questions.
“The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now–for this weekend,” Trump said. “If they don’t do it I will override the governors.”
The governor also said, “In America, we need more prayer not less.”
It could be a thorny issue, though, as the 10th Amendment to the Constitution says powers not delegated to federal government are reserved to the states.
On Thursday, Trump had a conference call with 1,600 pastors and faith leaders from around the country, including Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. He reassured them he wants to get churches reopened, Fox News said.
