NEW YORK (77 WABC) –The Tokyo Summer Olympics will not have a second postponement. If the games can not get played next summer because of the coronavirus, they will be cancelled completely.
IOC president Thomas Bach, was reportedly told by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that 2021 is the “last option” for the Tokyo Games, according to the BBC.
Bach admitted to BBC Sport,”You cannot forever employ 3,000 to 5,000 people in an organizing committee. You cannot have the athletes being in uncertainty.”
The 2022 Winter Olympics is scheduled for Beijing just six months after the Tokyo Games wrap up.
The 2020 Summer Olympics was delayed by year when organizers moved the global event for July 2021.
“We have to be prepared for different scenarios. There is the clear commitment to having these games in July next year.
“We have to be prepared for different scenarios,” Bach said. “At the same time, looking at the scenarios this may require towards the organization, with regard to health measures, these maybe need quarantine for the athletes, for part of the athletes, for other participants.”
