NEW YORK (77 WABC) — From New York to Washington, diagnostic testing for COVID-19 and the antibodies are recognized as vital pieces to getting the economy restarted.
ProHealth Urgent Care is one of the many facilities providing the expanded testing in New York.
Dr. Daniel Griffin is the head of infectious diseases at ProHealth. He said the role of the antibody test is still not clear at the moment.
“What we would like to know, or would like to believe, is that antibody test means that you can’t get reinfected,” Griffin said. “We honestly don’t know that yet.”
That uncertainty means, at least, some immunity from another bout of the coronavirus is yet to be determined.
“We’re still in a learning phase,” Griffin said. “…We’re hoping we’ll be at a point where that test also says there’s some level of protection, but we’re not that there yet.”
While searching for the immunity answer, it still opens the door for more questions about COVID-19.
“We also don’t know if a second bout is milder or more severe, as we’ve seen with certain other viruses,” Griffin said.
