Sunday night was the first night fans were eager tune to ESPN for new content since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown sports over a month ago. The highly anticipated premiere of ‘The Last Dance’ brought big ratings to the sports network, giving ESPN their most-watched documentary yet.
The 10-part series, focussing on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during their 1997-98 championship run to win their sixth and final NBA title, premiered on Sunday night with the airing of the first two episodes. The two-hour airing averaged 6.1 million viewers, and 3.5 million in the 18-49 demo.
The hourly breakdown was 6.3 million viewers for episode 1, with 5.8 million for episode 2.
The documentary was initially scheduled to be released in June as the NBA season reached the finals, but due to the sports shutdown ESPN announced the early release date last month. Two episodes will air back-t0-back every Sunday night through May 17th.
