NEW YORK (77 WABC) – Mets fans hoping that Joe Girardi would be the next manager in Queens will have to look elsewhere for Mickey Callaway’s replacement.  The former Yankee manager has reportedly been hired by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies fired Gabe Kapler after two disappointing seasons, and Girardi quickly became a favorite to be their next manager.  The Phillies finished just .500 in 2019 after bringing in All-Star outfielder Bryce Harper to a mega 13 year contract.

The Mets had reportedly interviewed Girardi twice.  He also met with the Chicago Cubs, who ultimately hired David Ross for their opening.

Girardi managed the Yankees for 10 seasons, winning a World Series in 2009 and having a record of 910-710 during that time.  He also managed the Marlins for just one season in 2006.

The Mets move on from Girardi with Carlos Beltran, Eduardo Perez, Tim Bogar and a supposed “mystery candidate” as their managerial options.
