Laurie Cantillo Named TALKERS Magazine “Woman of the Year.” WABC, New York program director Laurie Cantillo has been named by the TALKERS magazine editorial board as the 2010 recipient of the Judy Jarvis Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions by a Woman to Talk Radio. She will be presented the award at a special ceremony at the forthcoming New Media Seminar in New York City by last year’s honoree, Grace Blazer, PD of WTKK-FM, Boston. In being named recipient of this honor, Ms. Cantillo joins a luminous roster of highly accomplished woman who have served admirably in various segments of the talk radio industry from the ranks of talent, management and business including TRN talk show host Laura Ingraham; WWRL, New York president and general manager Adriane Gaines; syndicated computer guru Kim Komando; noted attorney and former radio talk show host Gloria Allred; former Comrex Corp, president, Lynn Distler; syndicated talker Randi Rhodes; Talk Radio News Service founder and bureau chief Ellen Ratner, TV talk pioneer and radio personality Lisa Evers and others going back to the early nineties when it was first given posthumously to independent talk syndication trailblazer Judy Jarvis for whom it is named. Prior to joining WABC as PD, Laurie Cantillo served as program director of Oprah & Friends Radio as well as PD of KFYI/XTRA, Phoenix and KTAR, Phoenix. The recipient of the 2010 Freedom of Speech Award, also to be presented at the New Media Seminar, will be announced tomorrow (12/16). New Media Seminar 2010 will take place on Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20.
77 WABC has announced that Laurie Cantillo has been named Program Director of America’s most listened to News/Talk radio station, effective Monday, February 2nd, 2009.
Steve Borneman, President and General Manager of WABC said “Laurie is an outstanding addition to 77WABC as it expands its programming, including Imus and Scarborough. We are absolutely thrilled to have her join our team. Laurie’s extensive expertise in the News/Talk business will be a tremendous asset to WABC.”
Ms. Cantillo had been the Program Director for the Chicago-based XM/Sirius “Oprah & Friends” channel, overseeing all aspects of its programming and operations since the channel’s September, 2006 launch. Cantillo regularly worked with hosts Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Maya Angelou. Additionally, she was the producer and sidekick for the “Rabbi Shmuley Show” on parenting and family issues.
Graduating first in her class with a degree in Radio and TV News from the University of Colorado, Ms. Cantillo has significant roots in journalism and has worked as a reporter/anchor at a number of radio stations across the country.
Ms. Cantillo continued her successful career as a programmer, executive producer, reporter and on-air host in Phoenix and in 1995 she was a finalist for Radio & Records Magazine’s "News/Talk Program Director of the Year” award. During her tenure at KFYI in Phoenix, the station won its first Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
Ms. Cantillo is an accomplished author, having written the best-selling "Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World" (Simon & Schuster, 1997). The book was re-released in 2007 and has been published in several foreign countries.
Ms. Cantillo and her two sons will be relocating to the New York metropolitan area.
